


In a county where unemployment stood at 9.6 percent in July, largely due to the coronavirus pandemic, the continued growth of ecommerce and home-delivery options in shopping offered needed good news.

“The expansion of Amazon’s footprint in Jacksonville illustrates an increased confidence in our economy and reputation as a center for logistics,” Mayor Lenny Curry said in written remarks that called the announcement “another big win for our community.” Local officials cheered the idea of adding to that total. Amazon said Wednesday it plans to add a new Jacksonville fulfillment center by the fall of 2021, adding 500 full-time jobs to a company whose local presence has quickly mushroomed.Ībout 5,500 people already work full-time for Amazon in Northeast Florida, said a spokesman for the online retail giant, whose first Jacksonville facility opened just three years ago.
